As you probably have already heard former Marvel Editor-in Chief Jim Shooter has died at the age of 73 after a long battle with esophageal cancer.
As the head of Marvel Comics during one of its largest and most significant periods of growth, Shooter was a controversial figure to put it mildly, one who was often at odds with The Comics Journal's core values regarding the artistic merits of the medium and the importance of creator's rights, particularly when it came to Marvel's treatment of Jack Kirby.
We hope to have a (nonpartisan) obituary of the man in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, here are links to some of our past essays about and interviews with the late writer and editor:
- Kim Thompson's 1978 interview with Shooter, from TCJ #40
- Gary Groth's 1980 interview with Shooter, from TCJ #60
- Groth's 1994 editorial, "Jim Shooter, Our Nixon," from TCJ #171
- Groth's 2011 follow-up essay confuting statements made about Jack Kirby on Shooter's blog, Jim Shooter: Groundhog Day in the Land of the Apocryphiars
