$6.1-B rail project underway

The $6.1-billion Malolos-Clark Railway Project (MCRP) is now underway after EEI Corp. disclosed the construction of a section of the network.

The MCRP is a proposed 53.1-kilometer (km)-long railway line that will link Malolos and the Clark economic zone and Clark International Airport (CIA).

The EEI portion involves the construction of a 6.5-km main railway line, including an elevated section, an underground section that will provide access to the CIA station, a substation and auxiliary facilities.

The MCRP is part of the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) project consisting of a total of 163 km of suburban railway network from New Clark City in Tarlac to Calamba in Laguna.

The NSCR project is funded by the Asian Development Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

The project is expected to be completed by 2025.

The Malolos-Clark line will serve approximately 342,000 passengers a day along the Manila-Clark corridor and up to 696,000 passengers to Calamba.

It is expected to minimize traffic in and around Metro Manila, as well as reduce air pollution and transport and logistics costs while boosting economic growth under the national government’s flagship Build, Build, Build infrastructure project.
