DITO Telecom breaks ground in Bicol

In a move to ensure healthy competition in the telecommunications industry, the government approved the entry of DITO Telecommunity Corporation (DITO Telecom) as the third major telecommunications player in the region. Such move is expected to encourage the major telecommunication players to improve their facilities and services. This is in line with the Bicol Regional Development Plan outcomes of ensuring a level playing field and providing efficient and affordable communication facilities and services to consumers.

The DITO Telecom plans to establish cell sites and construct telecommunication towers in the region, to wit: 81 in Albay; 22 in Camarines Norte; 83 in Camarines Sur; 9 in Catanduanes; 16 in Masbate and 37 in Sorsogon. Construction of telecommunication towers in Legazpi City has commenced and the start of operations is targeted in June 2020.

The Bicol RDC, through Resolution No. 15, Series of 2020, urged the local government units to facilitate the processing of permits, clearances, and other required documents for the rollout and subsequent operations of DITO Telecom, in accordance with Republic Act No. 11032 or the Ease of Doing Business and Efficient Government Service Delivery Act. Said resolution was forwarded to the six provincial and seven city governments in the region, as well as to the Department of Interior and Local Government and DITO Telecom.
